The Nelson Tasman Emergency Response Team, known as NZ-RT2, is the operational arm of the Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group.
The team’s members serve in a volunteer capacity, supported by funding for training and equipment by Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council.
The team specialises in urban search and light rescue, and also has a role in all types of civil defence emergencies, in particular, flood and storm response, collapsed buildings, landslips and welfare support. We also support LandSAR, Fire and Emergency NZ and Police.
The team is available 24/7, is fully self-sufficient and kitted out, with dedicated response vehicles, team welfare trailer, technical rescue gear, tools and radios. Training is held on Wednesdays with some weekend sessions. We are committed to being available for emergencies 24/7 for deployment of up to 72 hours, within 60 minutes from a callout.
We value the attitude of our people. We are looking for people who:
- Want to make a real and positive difference to their community
- Are enthusiastic, committed with a can-do attitude
- Have a desire to learn new skills
- Smile when the going gets tough
For frontline responders there is a large time commitment required to join the team and attendance at training must remain above 70%. There is also an expectation that you will be available for callouts when necessary. Family support is crucial and an agreement with your employer must be obtained before becoming an operational team member. Please do not apply unless you can meet this commitment.
NZ-RT2 are looking for people with a variety of practical or specialised skill sets, real-world experience, who are team players and people with leadership ability. We are also seeking members for non-operational support roles – such as admin, communications, equipment, and vehicle readiness – that can assist the operational team both with training and during an event.
Examples of past deployment have included Canterbury and Kaikoura earthquakes, regional flooding, wind storms, urban search & rescue, rural fire support and cordon management.
If you think that you have what it takes and wish to apply to join NZ-RT2 please select your role:
